Foxconn CEO Wants to Open 10-12 Centres in India, Create 1 Million Jobs

As per NDTV News On a short visit to Delhi, Foxconn (the company that's most famous for manufacturing the iPhone) CEO Terry Gou met NDTV Gadgets as part of a tour of India that will see him travel to Mumbai and Bengaluru. Foxconn is one of the biggest hardware manufacturers in the world, with plans to set up new manufacturing units in India, - and Gou says that it wants to do this as quickly as possible. Gou tells us that Foxconn wants to open 10-12 manufacturing facilities in India by 2020, but this needs a push from the government to go forward.

"I am ready, ask your government," says Gou. "Which state will make India most friendly for manufacturing - that's where we will start. There will be at least 1 million jobs created by 2020, maybe more, and not just basic jobs but jobs for skilled workers and engineers. We want to set up our plant in rural areas, and transform the area, with jobs and infrastructure."

Foxconn already has manufacturing experience in India - it first opened a plant in Chennai a decade ago, but there were "complications," Gou says, adding, "[it was] not our fault, [but the] political situation."

Gou feels that the government at the time was not supporting manufacturing enough. This is something that he says has changed by now. "Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pushed for development, I like your Make in India, Skill India," says Gou. "You have software, you have content, you need hardware and now Modi has made it your goal."

"Indian local [state] government is also much more friendly now," he adds, saying, "I met with the Chief Ministers of three of your states, AP [Andhra Pradesh], Gujarat, and Maharashtra. [The CMs of] Gujarat and Maharashtra came to China, and saw my facilities, and they're keen that we set up in their states. Ten years ago, government was not friendly."

Another major development, which Gou says helped convince Foxconn to invest in India, is the growing online businesses. "Your Internet content has grown, and your entrepreneurs, they are very smart people," says Gou. "They have created lots of opportunity, but they need hardware support and we will give it to them."

At this point, Gou wouldn't reveal the names of the companies that Foxconn is working with in India, or even the products it will manufacture here, though he hinted that there would be a preference for local brands.

"I don't care what brands I make here; you ask about Apple, but we will make the products where it makes sense," he says, "we have to look at lot of different factors before deciding what to make. But we will work with local brands and help them with design, and manufacture components locally, so that Indian brands can also start to export, right now India does not export."

But there are some major bottlenecks that he says need to be solved first, if the Make in India goal is to be achieved.

"Your infrastructure will be a big limitation. Today I was told it will take 20 minutes to reach you, but it took 1 hour 20 minutes because it rained," he points out. "Power is a problem. If there is a power cut, the entire factory has to stop working. Power, water, skilled workers, all these problems need to be solved."

"Even your tax - every state has different tax regulations, so we need to work this out for every place we want to do business," he adds. That said, he's not focussing on any one state right now - some believe that PM Modi's home state of Gujarat is a likely candidate for Foxconn's first factory - and a team from the company is in that state right now - but Gou says that there have been no decisions yet.

However, Gou also believes that the Indian government doesn't do enough to support local entrepreneurs. He says that while Indian entrepreneurs have been smart and have lots of good ideas, the government can do more to help startups.

"In China, we have BAT - Baidu, Ali, Tencent. That is like Google, Amazon, Facebook, in China," says Gou. "Why doesn't India have one? You have e-commerce, but you don't have any big cloud company like BAT. And the infrastructure - in China, in two years, we are 98 percent 4G. In India, your 4G is just 1 percent. And your 3G keeps switching to 2G."

"The spectrum is so expensive here, and the ARPUs are so low," he adds, "your companies spend all their money on spectrum when they need money to improve infrastructure also."

Gou says he also doesn't understand why India's market is so open. In China, for example, the likes of Google and Facebook are banned, which means local companies have found adoption amongst the 1.35 billion strong population.

"The young generation of India uses Facebook and WhatsApp, I had a meeting with Hike, and I asked them why?" he says. "I'm surprised, I asked Hike, 'your country doesn't support the young generations? Why do people use WhatsApp and not Hike?' You [India] have a huge market but you open it for anyone. But how do Western companies contribute to Make in India, or Skill India? How will India have a BAT?"

Gou says that Foxconn will be following a strategy of partnerships, as part of its greater strategy of Internet Plus. "We are not a hardware manufacturing company only," he says. "We are Internet Plus, that means content, and hardware for information processing, and cloud, and bandwidth. We have expertise for all of this, and we will partner with Indian companies to deliver this."

As a part of this, Gou says Foxconn will also be setting up incubators in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. "We will work with Indian businesses and help them grow, but your government must also help them grow," he adds. "We want to come to India, but it is not a one way thing, your government has to help push this."

India’s North East to get broadband connectivity from Bangladesh

As per TECH2 News Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad will lay the foundation stone for a project in Agartala tomorrow that aims to strengthen telecom services in the North Eastern states.

Under the project, an international gateway for broadband connectivity will be set up at Agartala in which connectivity will be provided through Bangladesh under an agreement between state-run BSNL and Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company limited.

“This project will resolve telecom connectivity issue to a great extent in North Eastern states. At present we provide connectivity from Chennai via Kolkata to North East. This will be now a short route cable between Cox Bazar cable landing station in Bangladesh to Agartala through Akhaura,” Prasad told reporters here.

The cost of the project is Rs 19.1 crore and annual operational expenditure is around Rs 7.2 crore.

“We will get bandwidth of 10 Gbps which can be extended up to 40 Gbps,” the minister added.

The project is likely to be commissioned by January 2016.

WhatsApp could face ban in UK within weeks

As Per TECH2 WhatsApp could soon be banned in the UK, owing to the strict laws on social media and online messaging services.

According to Express.co.uk, UK Prime Minister David Cameron is now looking at new legislation that plans ‘to stop people from sending any form of encrypted messages’.

Today, there are popular messaging services in the UK namely, WhatsApp, iMessage and Snapchat. If the new legislation is passed then all these services could be banned in the UK in the coming weeks.

He reportedly said, “In our country, do we want to allow a means of communication between people which we cannot read? My answer to that question is: ‘No, we must not’.”

With the new Investigatory Powers Bill, Internet service providers, Internet companies like Facebook, Google and others, will need to keep a record of your activity. The new bill, the pace of which has been accelerated due to recent concerns over terrorist attacks, could be passed by Autumn.

Though the complete details of the bill are still undisclosed, it means that the government will now get to spy on users irrespective of whether they are crime suspects or not. Sounds creepy, doesn’t it?

Meanwhile, popular messaging service, WhastApp, has updated its Web app. WhatsApp for Web has now been updated to include mobile-like features giving users more control over chats and group conversations on the web.

The power key also doubles up as the notification light.

The Black smartphone is powered by what is being called the second-gen 64-bit Snapdragon 615 (MSM8939) SoC, with four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.0GHz, and four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.5GHz. Upcoming OnePlus 2 will have 4GB RAM

As per TECH2 Team Oneplus has officially announced that its upcoming smartphone, OnePlus 2 will sport 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM. The company claims that the LPDDR4 RAM will bring benefits such as lower power consumption along with twice the bandwidth performance.

According to the OnePlus Forum, users will be able to use their favorite apps and much more without draining the battery. It stated that, ‘with LPDDR4, you get twice the bandwidth performance as the LPDDR3 at the same power consumption profile.’ The RAM offers optimal support for power-saving low frequency mode that brings clock speeds down when performing those everyday and necessary tasks.

The company’s CEO Pete Lau has also confirmed on Twitter that the new smartphone won’t cost more than $450. This works out to approximately Rs 28,500. In terms of other specifications, the smartphone is rumoured to feature a metal build. Also, the company has confirmed the presence of a Snapdragon 810 v2.1 SoC with a USB Type-C port too. In a recent post, OnePlus also claims that the fingerprint sensor will be better than Apple’s implementation of TouchID.

Along with a few leaks, an image of the OnePlus 2 has surfaced with some notable details. The OnePlus 2 will purportedly feature a metal frame with black matte finish. Also, the smartphone’s display is rumoured to be between 5.5-inches and 5.7-inches along with a 1080p resolution. It will be offered in 16GB and 64GB storage variants paired with 3GB RAM.

In other leak, a few live images of the OnePlus 2 have been spotted. According to a report by GSM Arena, the upcoming smartphone’s front panel is similar to the OnePlus One while the back panel offers a wooden finish. The report also points out that the back of the phone seemingly shows the rumoured fingerprint scanner on a vertical bar, under the camera and flash.

Xiaomi to Hold Launch Event on Thursday, Could Unveil the Mi 5

As Per NDTV.com Xiaomi has announced a July 16 event where the company is likely to reveal its flagship Mi 5 smartphone alongside the bigger variant Mi 5 Plus.

The Chinese company confirmed the launch event in a teaser post on Weibo and shared an image showing possibly the Mi 5 smartphone's side with letters "PK" imprinted in the middle of the image. The teaser invite confirms that the event will see a sleek smartphone launch; though at this point it is not clear whether the company will be launching the Mi 5 or another device.

Further cementing speculations about the launch of Mi 5 is the fact that the Xiaomi Mi 4 was launched in July (specifically on July 22) last year. It is possible Xiaomi is gearing up to reveal successor to the 2014 flagship smartphone in the same month this year.

Some of the preliminary leaks have suggested that the Xiaomi Mi 5 would be priced at CNY 2,399 (approximately Rs. 24,500). It is said to feature a 5.2-inch QHD (1440x2560 pixels) LCD display with Corning Gorilla Glass 4; a Snapdragon 810 processor; a 16-megapixel rear camera; a 13-megapixel front camera, and a 3000mAh battery. An earlier report also tipped that Xiaomi's Mi 5 flagship will come with a built-in fingerprint scanner.

The rumoured Xiaomi Mi 5 Plus, on the other hand, is said to feature a 5.7-inch QHD (1440x2560 pixels) display; Snapdragon 820 SoC; 3500mAh battery, a 23-megapixel rear camera with OIS and laser autofocus, and a 12-megapixel front camera.

Considering that lately several reports have pointed to an October-November launch timeline for the Mi 5 smartphone, it is also possible the recently spotted Xiaomi 'Libra' may be unveiled at July 16 event.

Of course, we will have to wait till Thursday to see what Xiaomi has planned to launch.

Bajaj Pulsar AS200 Review

Starts At Rs. 93,457(Ex-Showroom Price)

The Pulsar AS200 was launched in April 2015 and is one of the first products in Bajaj’s Pulsar ‘Adventure Sports’ range. Based on the Pulsar 200NS, the Pulsar AS200 is aimed at young customers who are looking for a stylish commuter, which can double up as a touring motorcycle.

The Pulsar AS200 gets an additional semi-fairing which reduces the drag coefficient of the motorcycle, besides improving the aesthetics of the motorcycle. The Pulsar AS200 also comes with a tall fairing and a projector headlamp. Most of the remaining components have been borrowed from the Pulsar 200NS’ parts bin, which should help Bajaj save on production and development costs.

The Pulsar AS200 is built on the same perimeter frame which is used in the Pulsar 200NS and the Pulsar RS200. The powertrain has also been borrowed from the naked sibling, which is a 199.5cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled triple-spark unit that produces 23.2bhp and 18.3Nm of torque. It comes mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. Braking power is provided by 280mm disc at the front and a 230mm disc at the rear. Suspension duties are performed by conventional telescopic forks at the front and a nitrox monoshock unit at the rear.

With its price tag, the Bajaj Pulsar AS200 doesn’t really have any competitor in the Indian market though Hero does offer a cheaper option in the form of the Karizma. The Pulsar AS200 is available in three paint schemes – red, blue and black.

Based on the Pulsar 200NS, the AS200 is a global product for Bajaj and will be launched in several international markets. The AS200 features a 200NS-inspired rear section, swing arm, and seat positioning, though it sports a windshield larger than that of the NS200.
